Game Rules

U5-U7 Boys, Girls and Coed

1. Teams play two 15-minute halves

2. U5 Teams will play 3v3 and U6-U7 will play 4v4. All age groups will play without goalkeepers.

3. Games are officiated by a parent coach

a. The “loose boundaries” rule will be in effect at all times.

b. The “New Ball method” will be used to manage the game. (Coach per half is asked to roll out a“new ball” when the ball crosses the sideline, end-line, or play has been stopped for a foul or goal. The new ball should be used to keep players engaged and moving).

Also, when throwing out a new ball, please roll the ball out rather than throwing it high in the air.  Here are some ideas on where to roll the ball:  a) into open space away from the crowd of players; b) to a player not receiving much action; c) towards the opposing team’s end if you are winning by a lot.

Have 1-2 parents stand on the end lines to help shag the balls and get them back to the coach in charge of throwing in the “new ball”

c. The offside rule will not be enforced.

d. Incidental fouls for pushing, tripping, and handling the ball will not be called.

e. Substitutions can be made at any game stoppage.

4. In the event that the goal differential is greater than 5, opposing coaches are encouraged to discuss appropriate options to balance the game. Options may include:

a. Implement restrictions on the leading team (be creative, but also be sensitive to other team).

Here are just a few ideas:

i. All players on team must touch ball before scoring

ii. On restarts, leading team must all retreat to own half in order to allow losing team space to begin an attack

b. Team that is down gets to add an extra player until goal differential less than 5.

c. Team that is up removes a player and plays down until goal differential less than 5.

d. Exchange players

5. Only coaches should coach/instruct players during the game.

6. Parents must sit on the opposite side of the field from coaches and players.

7. Please keep in mind the player’s ages, abilities, and our focus to develop soccer players. FC Boulder wants to create a fun, safe and educational environment for all of our players in every game.

8. Please respect the players and their development this season. Enjoy the process and have a great season!!

U8 Boys and Girls

1. Teams play two 20-minute halves.

2. Teams play 6v6 w/ goalkeepers.

3. Games will have officials. The primary role of the official will be simply to call out of bounds, fouls, and help with restarts.  They will NOT call offsides. Please give these young referees plenty of support and wiggle room to use their best judgment – this is not an easy job.

Throw-ins: balls crossing the sideline will be brought back into play using a throw in. Try to have players throw ball from behind their head and keeping both feet on the ground. If a player cannot achieve a proper throw-in after 1-2 chances, allow play to resume to keep the game moving along. We don’t want to take away the momentum of the game.

Goal Kicks: When a team is taking a goal kick the opposing team must position themselves behind the restraining line. The kicking team may position themselves behind or in front of the restraining line. The opposing team cannot pressure the ball until it has been touched by kicking team if ball is played in front of restraining line.

Corner Kicks: Occurs when defending team kicks or last touches it across their own end line.

General Rules all Season:

a. Play restarts from center of field after a goal is scored.

b. The offside rule will not be enforced.

c. Incidental fouls for pushing, tripping, and handling the ball will be called at refs discretion.

d. Substitutions can be made on goal kicks, throw ins, injury, and kick offs.

e. Sportsmanship:  if a player accidentally fouls or hurts another player, please encourage them to help the other player up, apologize, and shake hands.

f. No heading. Incidental heads will result in a drop ball.

g. No punting. Keepers should throw, roll balls, or kick from ground into play.

4. In the event that the goal differential is greater than 5, opposing coaches are encouraged to discuss appropriate options to balance the game. Options may include:
